Know what you are signing up for

This is a 1099 independent contractor role — Outlier will not withhold any income, social security, or Medicare taxes from your weekly pay. Your rate scales up to $30/hr depending on your tracking tier, skills, and active project requirements. You set your own schedule, but work comes in waves and queues can experience dry spells.

Build your profile and confirm your identity

Submit your details to the General Inbound (Coding) Expert Community. Upload your current resume and link your active LinkedIn profile. List your strongest programming languages — the system uses these to pull your application into the active technical pool. Then complete biometric identity verification via Persona — take a live selfie using your phone or webcam and upload a clear, well-lit photo of a valid government-issued ID (passport or driver's license). Remove glasses and ensure bright lighting to avoid getting stuck in a verification loop.

⚠️ Do not use a VPN during verification. Your network IP must match your eligible country of residence (US, Canada, UK, Australia, New Zealand, Argentina, Mexico, or Puerto Rico).

Pass the initial coding assessment

Once your identity is verified, your dashboard will generate a link to a take-home coding screening. You will be asked to identify bugs, fix broken code, and document your reasoning. After submitting, your dashboard will switch to a "Pending Review" screen while automated and human reviewers grade your submission. This can take anywhere from a few hours to several business days.

⚠️ Treat this with total focus — failing the initial screening means your profile will not be placed into the matched talent pool.

Wait to hear back on your application

If you pass the coding screening, you will be placed into the active queue to wait for a project match. When a matching project opens, you will receive a direct invitation on your dashboard along with mandatory project-specific documentation and tutorials.

Onboard to your matched project

Study the project-specific guidelines carefully and pass the project qualification quiz to activate your live tasking queue. Each project has its own rules — make sure you understand them fully before starting.

Start active tasking and join Discourse

Once your project quiz is cleared, start tracking paid hours on live AI models. Your role involves reviewing, rating, and improving AI-generated code snippets. Navigate to the Community tab on your dashboard to sync with Discourse — this is where Team Leads distribute daily rule updates and patch documentation.

Link payment details for weekly payouts

Outlier operates on a strict weekly payment cycle. Navigate to your account billing profile to link your preferred payout method — this contract supports payments via PayPal and AirTM. Earnings from the prior week are distributed automatically within a few business days of the weekly close.
